Mobile Gem Mining Events
The Mobile Sluice Gem Mining Experience:
Mining ore bags from different regions around the world can be bought at events, or mobilize the sluice to your event and pre-order the event bags.
- Bring the ore-bag and sieve to the sluice and place the sieve in the running water.
- Pour all or some of your bag in the sieve and shake-it-all-about until there is nothing but gems or fossils on the top.
- Bring the wet sieve with your treasures to the table and pour out the contents onto a plastic tray for sorting.
- Follow the clues on the labels to learn the secrets of mineral identification!
- Ask our staff if you have something special and you can’t identify the gem!
- Don’t forget to take home your gems and the burlap mining ore bag!

Rent our Sluice and Mine for Gems at your Next Event!
Do you have an event of your own and would like to bring a gem mining experience to it? We can help! Our sluice is mobile and can be rented for your trade show, festival, neighborhood fair, or indoor major events. This mine is suitable for 200-250 miners per hour and is fun, affordable and engages all ages with identification clues and exciting treasures
If you are an scout leader, or educator and are you looking to augment your curriculum with a a currated Earth & physical Science programs for 1st through 5th grade TEKS, then we can mobile the field trip to your school or next Den meet-up.

Birthdays at the Katy Rock Shop
Katy Rock Shop will provide 3 tables, a tent and private access to one side of the Gem Mine when your birthday is at the Rock Shop. Please book at least 2 weeks in advance to see availability.
Host during a Katy Rock Shop event day on: Host your event at the Katy Rock shop during a regular event day and get your own water circulating runner for 1 hour. This package includes 15 mining ore bags and a Mystery bag for birthday person! Price $250
Host During Normal Hours: Host a private event at the Katy Rock Shop any day of the week for 2 hours. This package includes 25 mining ore bags and a Mystery bag for birthday person! it includes a $75 set-up/tear down fee. Price $425
Mobilize the sluice to your birthday: Want a gem mining activity for your child or client? We can mobilize in the Katy, to Houston area; but there is a minimum purchase of 60 mining ore bags to mobilize the Sluice to your location for 3 hours. The extra $150 mobilization fee assures a fully staffed activity for your event lasting up to 3 hours. The minimum purchase package is $1,000

Mobile Gem Mining Event Options
Mobilize the sluice as a activity to your event! Custom packages and mining ore bags are curated to-your event. We have printed logos for event planners and chose theme specific gems and fossils. If you are expecting hundreds to thousands of participants, the sluice can support up to 200 miners per hour and is suitable for indoor venues like the Katy Merril Center, or outdoor festivals, markets, neighborhood openings and fairs.
Educators and Scouts of America
- A at-your-school field trip for Katy, Cypress, and the Houston area school districts. Each grade level has their own mining ore bag, instructional program and exercise sheet, curated to the Science Texas TEKS updated for 2024, k-5th grade.
- A at-your-den meetup field trip perfect for Scout Masters and Den Leaders looking for mineral identification and rock hounding activities to support their kiddo’s badge progressions.
Mobilizing the Gem mine for a full day event is $250 per day and includes 5 staff members, travel, and sluice consumables. A half day event is $150 and includes 3 staff members, travel, and sluice consumables.

Some Considerations
- Katy Rock Shop will need access to a water source with hose and a normal 110 electrical outlet. If there isn’t availability of either, please contact us(info@katyrockshop.com)to discuss special arrangements.
