We currently offer 3 Earth Science 🌍 classes for fall semester 2025. We will have 4 classes per day with 25 seats in each class. Please start with the Rock Cycle, as those skills are used in subsequent classes.

1. The Rock Cycle on 1st Thursday

The miners will learn how to use a magnifying glass, 🔍 observe a rock’s grains, feel texture differences and relate all their observations to the three major rock groups.

2. Hardness Testing with the Moh’s Scale on 2nd Thursday

Learn about the Moh’s Hardness test and Streak testing and how to apply the critical skills and to identify the tricky ones using these techniques to test rocks safely at home or in the field!

Kiddos review the rock cycle, gravity, buoyancy, atoms, bonds, density, and how these influence hardness.

3 Fossils and Lithification on 3rd Thursday!

During the Fossils & Lithification class, the kiddos will learn about fossil types (molds, casts), about how layers deposit in rivers and oceans, and how fossils get preserved through the process of lithification and cementation.

The class will involve running 3 experiments and of course each person gets to mine for fossils with the Sluice!

The first experiment will be creating fossil molds, the second will be how sedimentary layers become stratified from particle settling velocity, and the third will be mineral crystallization, sped up for kids to observe the process!
