Gem mining at the Katy Rock Shop
Every Sunday you can mine for gems, rocks and fossils at the Katy Rock Shop! This ‘Sluice Sunday’ event also has animatronic dinosaur rides!

A sluice is a machine that recirculates water and recreates a river to efficiently mine gems. Our Gem Mine ‘Midas’ is a mobile activity that can be brought to your birthday, trade show, festival, neighborhood fair, or indoor event. We have programs designed for:
- Festivals / major events

- Homeschool/afterschool
- Katy/Houston area Independent School Districts
- Earth Science classes
The activity engages all ages through identification clues and our helpful staff. All the exciting treasures you find, you get to keep and add to your collection!
The Fall of 2025 semester includes the following classes each Thursday:
- Rock Cycle
- Mineral Identification
- Fossils and Lithification
If you are a scout leader, or educator and are you looking to augment your curriculum with a curated Earth & physical Science program for 1st through 12th grade; then join our Thursdays Earth Science classes.

Birthdays and the Scouts with the Katy Rock Shop
When you host your event at the Katy Rock Shop you get access to the gem mine (Sluice) for 1.5 hours. It includes staff explaining the activity and help with mineral and fossil identification. All events at KRS include private indoor and outdoor facilities, tables, chairs, kitchen and space to set up decorations and your food. Best of all, all mineral miners keep their treasures, the ore bags and identification cards! Gone are the days of Goody-Bags.
Host during a Katy Rock Shop event day

Host your event at Katy Rock Shop with a 1-hour water circulating runner.
Includes 15 mining ore bags and a Mystery bag for the birthday person.
Host During a Normal Hours
$ 425
Host a private 2-hour event at Katy Rock Shop any day of the week, with 25 mining ore bags and a Mystery bag for the birthday person.
Includes a $75 set-up/tear down fee.
Mobilize the sluice to your birthday
$ 150
Mobile gem mining activity available in the Katy to Houston area with a minimum purchase of 60 mining ore bags for 3 hours.
Includes a $150 mobilization fee for a fully staffed event, lasting up to 3 hours.

This Gem mining event includes 15 Event ore bags and 1 Mystery ore bag for the birthday person. $325
Includes verbal instruction on mineral identification and identification cards with clues to help kiddos

This event Includes a presentation for the group on sluice mining to support merit badge progression in the area of: Mining-In-Society, Oceanography, and Engineering.
Includes verbal instruction on mineral identification and identification cards with clues to help kiddos with merit badges for: Collections and Geology.
For larger Den meet-ups (> 50 scouts) we can mobilize to your location.

This is how the experience works for a gem mining birthday or event.
Bring the ore-bag and sieve to the sluice and place the sieve in the running water.
Pour all or some of your bag in the sieve and shake-it-all-about until there is nothing but gems or fossils on the top.
Bring the wet sieve with your treasures to the table and pour out the contents onto a plastic tray for sorting.
Don’t forget to take home your gems and the burlap mining ore bag!

Some Considerations When Mobilizing to Your Event
Katy Rock Shop will need access to a water source with hose and a normal 110 electrical outlet. If there isn’t availability of either, please contact us(info@katyrockshop.com) or call (832)-437-4733 to discuss arrangements.
