Katy Rock Shop – Earth Science Classes (Fall 2026)
This is the class for 🪨 Rockhounds (Ages 13–Adult). book any of the 4 class options for kids or adults aged 13+ here. These are our most advanced classes and all include college level geology techniques and skills. for a summary of the class topics click <Here>
Some of the advanced concepts include:
1. Lapidary skills such as reciprocating flat lap polishing, trim and slab saw rock cutting, rock tumbling and experiments with a flume to demonstrate erosion on fast forward
2. For Fossils and dinosaurs we go deep into geologic time,
-> Dinosaur extinction event in the context of all extinction events
-->Observe how depositional environments form with a flume.
-->Observe super-saturation & how crystallization preserves life.
-->Mine for fossils & link them to a stratigraphic chart.
-->Excavate real carbon fossils!
-->Create fossil field jacket for your favorite fossil!
3. Rock and mineral identiofication will include mohs hardness testing, streak testing and identification using short and long wave fluorescence.
4. for maps and map making, everyone learns to walk paces and measure distance in the field, triangulate using a compass, orienteering, setting up a grid to hunt for meteorites.
These classes $40 per person and group discounts do apply!
